PERFECT PAIRING

How do you find a timepiece with enough integrity to be able to sit alongside the watch your father bought for you on your eighteenth birthday, and has been on your wrist for 36 years ever since? How do you find a piece that holds the same high level of personal value to you, without being disloyal to your current watch? That is the dilemma Chris Stone's wife faced when looking for a dress watch for her husband's birthday a couple years ago. She was a bold woman to attempt it, but boy did she pull it off. The key to her success was not down to any specific requirements of the watch, but to her great relationship with her husband. When crafted by top artisans, specifically to the wants and needs of the future owner, a watch becomes more than a timepiece, it is a companion, a part of you, your history and your memories. The piece comes already wrapped in story and meaning, that is completely personal to you.

So Chris, how did you fall into the MEERSON universe, and end up with that beautiful Première on your wrist?

Chris Stone: My Altitude Première was actually given to me as a gift, by my wife. She very kindly bought it for my birthday a couple of years ago. I believe she discovered the MEERSON brand through Chris Molloy, who my wife has met a few times over the years. So that was the connection, she was looking for a watch for me, an evening watch in particular, however how she went about choosing it I do not know as it was a gift! So I am in the dark for the final bit of the story naturally.

"I wanted something much more classically stylish, which my Altitude is in abundance"

How do you like to wear your ALEXANDRE MEERSON timepiece?

So I have two watches, I have a Rolex GMT master that my father gave me for my 18th Birthday, which was 36 years ago, and I wear that during the day, everyday. As you may expect, due to circumstances behind me receiving it, this watch holds a lot of sentimental value to me. It is a lovely rigid thing, but due to its general design and the amount of wear it has seen, its not great for the evenings or special occasions. So I wanted something much more classically stylish, which my Altitude is in abundance. I wear it in the evenings predominantly, although I have to say I sometimes forget and end up wearing it for a couple weeks. It simply fits my wrist so well, due to its slightly curved back, and lends itself really well to my platinum wedding band!

Are there any facets or characteristics of your watch that you particularly enjoy?

Well what I really like is how unobtrusive and unostentatious it is. So, I love the fact that the quality is all in the detail and in the wearing of it. For instance; the shaped back that fits so nicely on my wrist, which means my cuffs don’t get caught on it at all. The shape and overall styling of the piece are classically understated. Less is very much more with this watch, a mantra I try to stick to in my life. This is not to take away from all the beautiful details, that are absolutely spot on. Its a joy to wear.

I am a fan of the titanium case too, which is really quite special. It gives the timepiece a great vibrance. It is a special material that compliments its surroundings so well by absorbing its colour. Of course it is that much more special for me as it has a story, history and meaning. It doesn’t shout, certainly you see a lot of guys come into a room and their watch is shouting at you. I don’t want that, I like things that are beautiful and special to me, rather than something that is obvious and garish.

"That to me is what luxury is in a way, when an object comes paired with memories"

So as you know my wife chose this for me, my other watch that I wear my father bought for me, who obviously is no longer with us. That to me is what luxury is in a way, when an object comes paired with memories. The object means a lot to me, because I know the story, and thats what makes it special, rather than a particular facet that is flashy or ostentatious. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but nobody has ever asked me about this watch. Nobody, ever, has asked me ‘tell me about that watch’ because people don’t notice it in that way. But thats absolutely what I want, I love its subtle elegance.

So you mentioned how special your first watch is to you, how has your MEERSON done living up to such a high standard?

I find it almost impossible to compare the two. In the evenings, particularly if we are going somewhere where I would be wearing black tie, my old Rolex isn’t right, where as this is. It has a fantastic time and a place. But it certainly adds something to me. I think its all in both stories, I know how this is all sourced and made, which is incredibly interesting. And I know how it was chosen for me by my wife, which is lovely. A bit more thought goes into choosing this, to buy this MEERSON watch was a lot more thoughtful than going to buy a well known brand. She could have popped into town and picked one of the shelf, but this is more personal, and therefore special.

The fact that this watch has a great story, allows it to sit next to my Rolex so well. Such different stories, but both very personal to me. When I put my Rolex on, I am flooded with all the memories I have related to it, and this is starting to build its own collection. This is the watch I will be wearing when my children get married, for example. This is the watch I will be wearing for big family dinners, from now on. A companion for the big occasions, with the people I love. That's luxury.
