ELEGANCE IN ITS SIMPLICITY

On a lovely English summer morning, we were warmly welcomed into Peter Callaway’s London home. A longtime friend of the brand, Peter appreciates the beautiful balance of form and functionality found at MEERSON, in particular with his Altitude Première. Credit for this must in part be a result of his distinguished career working with luxury brands, along with his good taste! This is one of the many reasons why we at MEERSON identify ourselves with haute couture, with its focus on creating exquisitely crafted, timeless pieces, as opposed to fashion. This metaphor can be extended to most things Peter holds value in. A passionate fan of the arts and especially the opera, he highlights its ability to seamlessly fuse theatre and music together, crafting a wonderful harmony. Similar to form and function, one element on its own is impressive, but when intertwined they create something special which prompts a unique emotional reaction. It is this space Peter explores with us.

Hi Peter, can you start by telling us how you came to discover the world of MEERSON?

Peter Callaway: It probably goes back to when I first met Alexandre. I’ve worked all my life in retail, and I was director of e-Commerce for House of Fraser when we connected via Linkedin. We ended up having a bit of online dialogue about luxury brands and their online presentation; at that time luxury brands were struggling with the online space and Alexandre was very passionate about finding a solution. That was how we first connected. After I left House of Fraser and sent up my own consultancy, for retailers and brands, I was working on a project in Germany when Alexandre was brought on to the team. We were working closely together and became good friends. We spoke at great length about his passion and life, which really resonated with me. He’d talked a lot about wanting to start his brand, so we stayed very much in touch about that. Then when I saw the watches I just loved them; the design, the story, everything about them. We’ve now been friends for getting on to ten years I should think. It has been great to see how the brand has taken off.

"If I want to feel like a better version of myself, I will put it on."

When it came to picking your new watch, how much did your personal attachment to the brand sway your decision?

I was very interested to see how the brand developed, but I also objectively love the simple elegance of the Première's design. The story behind it definitely adds personal worth too, because Alex had told me a lot about his father and the heritage behind his name, and how he was really trying to reinvigorate it.

It was about the passion that is incredibly apparent at every stage of the process and the resulting all-round quality. To me, watches are extremely personal. Women can wear lots of jewellery however, men really don’t have the same opportunity. A watch is the only piece of jewellery most men have, so you want it to be a nice one really. I was looking for something that was more refined than my other pieces, so I could wear it for more formal and special occasions. I tend not to wear it every day, but if I want to feel like a better version of myself, I will put it on.

It's interesting you say that because when Alexandre designs, he has a particular occasion in mind and he creates for that scene. He created this watch for a fine dinner party, or a black tie event, so that is the exact sort of use he was visualising for it. What made you choose the Altitude Première in particular?

My watch has a very elegant and simple design, but it's got sufficient features which make it clear that it is not just any other watch. It is quite difficult to explain, it does get a lot of attention when people spot it, they like the look of it, they love the watch because it is just so elegant. I think that is the best phrase for it; elegant in its simplicity.

"It is what separates the best from the also-rans, my emotional response to interacting with it."

I wanted a model which had a date window, funnily enough that was quite important to me. I know you find the date everywhere, but because I’ve grown up with watches with dates, I instinctively look at my watch for it. I wasn’t looking for another sports watch or Chronograph, although I do like the D15, it is a beautiful watch. I wanted something that was exquisite and could be worn for formal occasions, and would not be a duplication of what I already have with my TAG Heuer, which is my everyday watch.

You mentioned you love the simplicity of the watch, are there any other characteristics of your watch you particularly enjoy?

There are lots of little things that Alexandre has told me about the watch which I love, I love the way it sits on the wrists, its wonderfully thin and light. The angle of the watch strap is such that it really sits perfectly on the wrist. It is packed with these great, subtle design features, which I enjoy rediscovering over time.

Could you see yourself adding another MEERSON piece to your collection?

I like the ethos of the house, and if I wanted to buy another watch I would go back and see what MEERSON had to offer. There are new collections coming out that I love, I particularly like the Mutiny. It is the latest thing that Alexandre is passionate about, I love the idea of customising it to be whatever you want it to be. But that would be more of a personality and fashion statement piece than my Première, which is more about looking classically refined.

You mentioned that your TAG Heuer is your everyday watch. After working extensively with luxury brands, does a brands stature and popularity affect the way you look at the product? Does it appear more or less desirable to you?

The fact that MEERSON wasn’t a well-known brand, for me has got some real positives. It makes the piece more unique and therefore special, as not everyone is wearing it. With brands like TAG, Rolex or Patek there is obviously so much money spent on marketing, that you do question whether as much money is going into the quality of the watch. I am certain there will be more money spent on the actual quality of the watch with MEERSON. But to me, brands are not about big labels or being very obvious. Even when I do wear something like Ralph Lauren, I like to with discreet logos and branding, so I prefer brands to be more refined than in your face. My TAG watch, ok its a very well known brand, and people know that its a TAG because of the unique watch strap design on the Carrera. But the fact that it is made by a big brand is not important to me, the quality of the product is.

I really love things that are built to an incredibly high standard. These KEF speakers for example, which I have had since 1976, there’s no way I would change them; they still sound fantastic and anything you could buy these days would not have the same quality. They were reference speakers at the time, and they still work perfectly. They may not have a design that is as contemporary as those you can find on the market today, but for me it's more about the quality of the sound than anything else. It is a duality of a products beauty, and its mechanical performance.

You obviously hold great value in all of your precious luxury items, including your MEERSON, could you summarise your relationship with them, and why they are important to you?

They all have to perform, which is the first thing, I think great design is about things which work well and are beautifully engineered, to deliver to the highest degree in their particular avenue. With speakers its sound quality, with cars its driving performance. It is not about the out and out performance though, it's about how the car engages with the driver, how you feel when you are driving it, when you get in and the engine makes its roaring sound, it all adds to the emotion of the car. It is exactly the same with my watch too. It is what separates the best from the also-rans, my emotional response to interacting with it.
